Dear Reader,

I am no sailor and I am no builder of boats, but I have decided to build a boat and hopefully one day sail around the world. Yes that’s right – around the world! Yes, in a boat that I will build myself. I can’t say I was expecting to do this either and I understand why some of my friends’ response was one of shock, disbelief, and a little ridicule. However, not all responded that way. My brother who knows me like no other along with my wife who has always been there for me when I have had some really crazy ideas and backed me to the hilt just responded, “Okay, when are you going?” My kids were also very supportive with some worries and concerns for my well-being as an aged old man of 62 years of age (and by the time I go I’ll be 66) due to my goal of circumnavigating the world. My friend Martin was very wise and simply said, “Build the boat and then think about where you would like to sail it!” I am paraphrasing!

So here I am with the plans bought and paid for and winging their way by special delivery to my wee 2-bedroom bungalow in Balmullo. I was so excited to get the email which told me that my number was 256 that I was transported back to Christmas 1970 when my Mam bought me a bike for Christmas! Yes, that’s how excited I am about this – and we all remember that excitement don’t we? As I take this journey I would love you to join me, even if it’s just for the laughs.
